Teriyaki: Mix equal parts soy sauce, mirin, sake. Saute protein of choice. When almost cooked, throw in a couple tablespoons of the mixture, and cook down over low heat.

Shoga-yaki: Basically a gingery version of teriyaki; add 1 teaspoon of grated ginger to the above mixture, and add to some sliced pork belly. Saute.

Stir fry: any vegetables of your choice and protein of your choice. Saute with garlic, add salt, pepper and a dash of soy sauce.

Simmered foods: Get some powdered dashi granules (they're everywhere) and make some dashi. Saute your ingredients and add dashi, and the aforementioned teriyaki mixture. Simmer and cook down to taste. If you make this with onions, beef/pork potatoes carrots and shirataki, you get Nikujaga. If you use tofu, onions, shirataki, you get Niku-Dofu.

Grilled foods are always easy; cured fish (fresh fish that's salted and dried for a bit) is a staple on the Japanese dining table. Grill up a chicken breast and eat with some Yuzu-kosho.

Now side dishes. Simple stuff like boiled greens (spinach, etc.), press out the water and eat with soy sauce. Tofu with grated ginger and soy sauce. Sauteed root vegetables flavored with the teriyaki mixture. Julienned daikon, lightly salted to draw the water out and mixed with a can of tuna and some mayo.
